What is HUD?
Head Up Display (HUD) is a technology originally developed for military jets. Recently, it has transitioned to the car industry and is becoming more and more attractive as designers endeavor to supply vehicle drivers with more information.
Manufacturers are finding that vehicle safety is enhanced if the driver can see important safety, navigation and vehicle information projected directly onto the windscreen of the car in front of his/her eyes rather than having to look away from the road. The HUD display enhances the overall driving experience by allowing drivers to keep their "eyes on the road" while still viewing critical vehicle data.
How does it work?
An image of the desired information is projected by use of a series of mirrors (usually from within the instrument panel) onto the windscreen. Because the windscreen consists of two pieces of glass separated by a PVB interlayer, optical correction is needed to prevent the appearance of a "double image" or ghosting to the observer. Through a proprietary process, Saflex HUD interlayer is carefully made with non-parallel surfaces that eliminate the "ghosting effect" and make the image sharp and easy to read.
The optical improvement benefits are achieved while maintaining the other performance and durability characteristics consistent with traditional Saflex interlayer products. The increasing demand for HUD technology has increased over the past several years, due to the innovation of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology and other enhanced driver information systems.
The virtual image appearing near the front of the vehicle is generated by high intensity projectors located in the instrument panel. The HUD display enhances the overall driving experience by allowing drivers to keep their “eyes on the road” while still viewing critical vehicle data.
